To ensure an Andersen® 400 or 200 Series casement or awning window operates smoothly, we recommend performing routine care and maintenance on the operator, hinges and locks.
Cleaning and Lubricating Operator, Hinge and Lock Hardware
An excessive build-up of dirt, dust and debris on the operator, hinges or locks can affect the performance of the product and make it hard to open and close. Hardware screws, especially hinge screws, should be periodically inspected and tightened if necessary. While in some regions windows may only require cleaning once or twice a year, windows installed in some coastal, industrial or agricultural areas with high amounts of airborne particles may need to be cleaned more frequently. Wind buffeting the sash over time can loosen hardware fasteners. Remove grease or debris with a soft, dry cloth, then lubricate hinges and all other moving parts with a dry silicone spray. Oil-based lubricants or harsh abrasive cleaners are not recommended.
To clean hardware such as operator handles use a mild soapy water solution, then rinse and wipe dry with a soft cloth. After cleaning, lubricate moving hardware parts with adry silicone spray.
Important
The use of harsh abrasive cleaners is not recommended and can cause damage. Liquid spray lubricants or those with acetone are not recommended. Do not attempt to refurbish hardware. Instead, contact a professional hardware restorer for refurbishing.
Bright Brass, Antique Brass, Satin Nickel, Distressed Nickel, White or Stone
Wash hardware using a mild detergent and a soft cloth. Andersen bright brass and satin nickel hardware finishes are protected with a physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating process resulting in a beautiful finish resistant to scratches, corrosion and tarnish. Andersen satin nickel and bright brass are covered by the same 10-year transferable limited warranty.
Polish chrome finishes using a commercially available chrome polish following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Adjust Casement Window Sash
Sash adjustments can keep a casement window operating smoothly. Depending on the casement window Series and operator type, there may be sash adjustments available. See Sash Adjustments for Andersen® Casement Windowsfor more information.
