Tempered glass is heat-treated glass. The heat treatment process includes heating and rapidly cooling the glass to create areas of compression and tension within the glass. Tempered glass is stronger than non-tempered glass. Most of our glass offerings are available as tempered glass. For example, High-Performance Low-E4® glass is available as tempered High-Performance Low-E4 glass. And all Andersen® patio doors will have tempered glass.
To identify if the Andersen® product has tempered glass, inspect the glass for the tempered safety code
(see below). The tempered glass code is etched into the corner of the glass, but never the same corner as the Andersen® glass logo. SGCC (Safety Glazing Certification Council) is also etched into the glass near the tempered safety code.
Contact Andersen® Windows and Doors for assistance on where to find the tempered glass code. If you are unsure if you need tempered glass, please contact your local building code official. To learn about available glass types, please see Glass Types Available for Andersen® Windows and Patio Doors.
