Andersen® gliding patio doors are designed to open and close easily with minimal force. If your patio door won't close or is difficult to close, you can check that the panels are properly adjusted and installed per the installation instructions.
Fix a Gliding Patio Door That Won't Close or is Difficult to Close
This article will walk you through key performance information about your patio door and provide solutions to improve its operation.
Let's Get Started
Important Information About Patio Door Performance
We recommend keeping your gliding patio door closed and locked when not in use to achieve optimal performance. It is designed to perform at its published performance grade when installed and adjusted according to the installation instructions, and closed and locked. When the door is left unlocked, the door's weatherstrip may decompress (expand), pushing the operating patio door panel slightly away from the side jamb, the vertical side of the door frame.
Note: If you have a gliding patio door that was installed in the last few months, we recommend keeping it closed and locked for the first 30-45 days while the new weatherstrip sets.
1. Adjust Operating Panel
If your gliding patio door's weatherstrip appears decompressed (expanded) and the panel doesn't move or glide easily, we recommend adjusting the operating panel's alignment to improve operation. These adjustments will be done with the patio door panel closed and locked.
For step-by-step instructions, see Adjust Operating Panel on Andersen® Gliding Patio Doors.
Resolution
Try opening and closing your gliding patio door. If the instructions above resolved the concern, you're all set! Your door should open and close easily.
2. Still Having Trouble? Try Checking Installation
If your gliding patio door was installed out of plumb, out of level, or out of square, the operating panel may move or glide too quickly.
To check your window's installation, see Checking Window or Patio Door Unit Installation or Locating Andersen® Window and Patio Door Service Providers if you would like a service provider to check the installation for you.
Resolution
Try opening and closing your gliding patio door. If the instructions above resolved the concern, you're all set! Your door should open and close easily.
