Essential routine maintenance can ensure optimal performance of your Andersen® patio door retractable screen Opens in a New Browser Tab. Checking the retractable screen housing installation can help your retractable screen perform smoothly. If you need assistance identifying your Andersen® products, visit our Identify Your Product Opens in a New Browser Tab pathway in the Andersen Window and Door Help Center.

Cleaning

The upper and lower tracks, which the retractable screen slides along, and all other components should be straight, free of dirt or debris, and damage-free. Avoid using an oil-based lubricant or cleaner. We recommend using a non-oil-based spray to lubricate the track.

If needed, remove contaminants from the glides and tracks with a vacuum or cloth. The screen tracks will need occasional vacuuming and rinsing out with water to remove dirt and debris. This will help keep the tracks clean and free of debris that may affect operation.

A clean and soft brush may be used to clean the insect screen mesh gently, as needed.

Operation

When the insect screen mesh is fully extended, the retractable screen handle automatically latches to the latch side. To unlatch the handle, slide the release lever up or down. The retractable screen automatically retracts when the latch is released.

The Andersen retractable screens are designed to release from the track under pressure to guard against damage to the retracting mechanism and/or insect screen mesh. If the insect screen mesh comes off the track, open and close the retractable screen to reset it.

When operating your Andersen retractable screen, be sure to keep the following items in mind:

Use a level, even, back-and-forth motion.

Do not lift or push down while operating the retractable screen.

Avoid applying inward or outward pressure to the handle.

Stepping on, pushing heavy objects, or rolling carts over the lower track of the screen frame may cause product damage.

Speed Adjustments

The tension on your retractable screen is factory preset.

Retractable screens manufactured February 2024 and later have a factory-set closing speed. Adjustments cannot be made to the speed of this retractable screen.

Retractable screens manufactured from June 2007 to January 2024 have adjustments available to change the tension, which controls the operating speed, see Canister Adjustment for Discontinued Retractable Screens for Patio Doors

Proper Usage

Andersen recommends checking the installation of your retractable screen yearly. Check to make sure that the installation of your retractable screen housing conforms to the recommendations provided in our installation guides, see Retractable Screen Installation for Gliding Patio Doors.

The retractable screen is intended for reasonable insect control and not the retention of objects, persons, or pets within the interior. The retractable screen will not stop a person from falling through the door.
