If your Andersen® casement or awning window operator handle spins but does not open or close the window, the set screw may be loose, or the operator or its handle may need to be replaced.
Fix an Operator Handle That Spins But Does Not Open/Close an Andersen® Casement or Awning Window
This article will walk you through a few solutions to try to fix a spinning operator handle.
Safety Warning

Tools and Supplies Needed
- Safety glasses
- Phillips head screwdriver
Let's Get Started
1. Check the Operator Handle Set Screw
- Start by checking the set screw located underneath the handle. This screw keeps the handle securely attached to the operator shaft.
- If the screw is missing, order a replacement set screw
online from the Andersen Parts Store. - If the screw is loose, use a Phillips head screwdriver to tighten the screw.
Resolution
Try opening and closing your window. If replacing a missing set screw or tightening a loose set screw resolved your concern, you're all set!
If your set screw is not missing and tightening it does not resolve your concern, see Step 2 below.

2. Still Having Trouble? Try a Handle from a Different Window
- Remove a handle from another window that works correctly.
- Remove your current handle by loosening the set screw, then test the window with the working handle.
- If the window opens and closes with the other handle, you will need a replacement handle. To order the correct replacement operator handle,
ensure you know your window type, Series, and vintage (manufacturing year).
- If the window still does not operate, the operator mechanism may need to be replaced. See Stripped or Worn Operator on Andersen® Casement or Awning Window for more details.
Resolution
Try opening and closing your window. If ordering a replacement operator handle or operator mechanism resolved your concern, you're all set!
