Operators are the mechanisms that open and close a casement or awning window when the handle is turned. Occasionally, these operators can wear out. If this happens, they cannot be repaired, and we recommend replacing them.

Replace a Stripped or Worn Casement or Awning Window Operator

This article will walk you through symptoms of a stripped or worn casement or awning window operator and how to install a replacement part.

Let's Get Started

1. Diagnose a Worn or Stripped Operator

Start by checking for symptoms that your window operator is stripped or worn. We recommend replacing your operator if any of the symptoms below match your operator's difficulties:

  • Window sash will not open or close properly.
  • Gears are visibly backing out or coming out of the operator housing when you attempt to close the window.
  • Gears feel loose or unstable during operation.
  • Handle turns more than ¾ of a full rotation when the window is fully closed.
  • Operator handle spins but does not open or close the window. If so, see Operator Handle Spins, Does Not Open/Close Andersen® Casement or Awning Window.
  • Operator cover is cracked or broken, which may make operating your window difficult.
    • Note: While the operator cover can be replaced on its own, a cracked operator cover is typically a symptom of operator and/or operator handle issues.

2. Order and Install Correct Replacement Operator

The type and style of operators vary with the window's Series and vintage. Before ordering a replacement part, you will need to determine the type of operator currently installed on your casement or awning window.
