To check your overall window or patio door unit for proper installation, follow the instructions provided in the YouTube® video below to measure for plumb, level and square. The same instructions may be used to check the installation of a window sash or patio door panel within the unit frame (apply steps to sash or panel instead of unit). Written instructions are located underneath the video.

Check for Plumb and Level

Check for plumb from the exterior of the window or door. Place the level against the face of the side jambs. The unit is plumb if the bubble on the level is centered between the indicator lines. If not the unit should be reset.

Check for level, from the exterior of the window or door. Place the level on the sill and look to see where the bubble settles. The unit is level if the bubble on the level is centered between the indicator lines. If the bubble is not centered between the lines, the unit should be reset.

Check Reveal

Inspect the reveal from the exterior of the window or door.

Inspect the horizontal and vertical reveal (gap) between the window sash or patio door panel and the unit frame. There should be a consistent and even reveal between the sash or panel and the frame. If there is an inconsistency in the horizontal or vertical reveal, adjustments may be available to allow the window sash or patio door panel to sit properly within the unit frame.

Check for Square

Check for square, from the interior of the window or door. Use a tape measure and measure diagonally from opposite corners of the unit, window sash or patio door panel. The measurements should be equal.

If the measurements on the frame are different by more than 1/8", the unit is out of square and should be reset.

If the measurements of the window sash or patio door panel are different by more than 1/8", this indicates the window sash or door panel is out of tolerance and should be replaced.
